Why Linen Gets Better With Every Wash

August 2026 · The Linen & Light Team

Linen is one of the oldest textiles in the world, and one of the few that genuinely improves with age. Where synthetic fabrics pill and stretch, linen's long flax fibres soften and relax with every wash, developing a hand-feel that no amount of factory finishing can replicate.

Each of our pieces is cut from long-staple European flax, chosen specifically for this quality. In the first few washes, you'll notice the fabric relaxing slightly and the surface softening — this is the linen settling into its final, most comfortable state, not a sign of wear.

Caring for it well

Wash cold on a gentle cycle, skip the fabric softener (linen doesn't need it), and line dry whenever possible. A cool iron while slightly damp will smooth the characteristic linen crease without flattening its texture entirely.
